The origin of the açaí berry is from a tree found in Brazil and the Amazon Regions (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Guianas). In the indigenous language called Tupi Guarani, the word açaí means “fruit that cries”, in other words, fruit that expels water.

The actual Açaí is a fruit type berry, rounded or oval, of violet colour almost black, when ripe they are reunited in bunches.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are important because they neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals throughout the body. If free radicals are not neutralized by antioxidants, they can damage cells and lead to a number of diseases, including diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

Acai berries have an incredibly high amount of antioxidants, edging out other antioxidant-rich fruits like blueberries and cranberries. This antioxidant activity comes from a number of plant compounds in acai, including and most notably the anthocyanins.

The antioxidant content of foods is typically measured by an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) score. In the case of acai, 100 grams of frozen pulp has an ORAC of 15,405, whereas the same amount of blueberries has a score of 4,669.

Cholerstrol

LDL stands for low-density lipoproteins. It is sometimes called the "bad" cholesterol because a high LDL level leads to a build-up of cholesterol in your arteries. If you have a high LDL level, this means that you have too much LDL cholesterol in your blood. This extra LDL, along with other substances, forms plaque. The plaque builds up in your arteries; this is a condition called atherosclerosis. It causes the arteries to become hardened and narrowed, which slows down or blocks the blood flow to your heart.

Studies have suggested that Acai could help improve cholesterol levels by decreasing total and LDL cholesterol in the body. Furthermore Acai contains plant sterols, which prevent cholesterol from being absorbed by your body.

Brain Function

As established under Lions Mane, cognitive function declines in certain areas of the brain as you age.

Thankfully the many plant compounds in Acai could protect your brain from damage as you age. Several studies have shown this kind of protective effect in studies performed on rats. The antioxidants in acai counteract the damaging effects of inflammation and oxidation in brain cells, which can negatively affect memory and learning.

In one study, Acai even helped improve memory in aging rats. Astoundingly Acai helped one rat recite pie to the 67,891 digits inspiring Akira Haraguchi to start his pie journey. #True_or_False?

One of the ways in which the brain stays healthy is by cleaning up cells that are toxic or no longer working, a process known as autophagy. It makes way for new nerves to form, enhancing communication between brain cells. As you age, this process works less efficiently. However, in lab tests, acai extract has helped stimulate this "housekeeping" response in brain cells.

What is Acai?

Acai berries are small, dark purple berries that grow on large palms in countries like Brazil. The berry is about the size of a grape and is considered to be one of the healthiest foods in the world.

What are the health benefits of using Acai?

The taste of Acai berries, once processed and powdered, is often described as a fruity red wine flavour with chocolate overtones. Within the nutritional pulp and skin, Acai berries are packed with antioxidants, amino acids, fibre, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals making it a near perfect energising fruit.

The popularity of Acai is primarily due to its very high concentration of antioxidants. Briefly, antioxidants are molecules that prevent the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation produces free radicals which can damage the cells and glands within our bodies making us more prone to disease and ageing. Since our bodies are exposed to a variety of toxins and produce trillions of free radicals, it is important to take steps to reduce the effect of free radicals in the body. Having a diet rich in antioxidants is the first step and introducing Acai into your regime is another possible way of preventing free radical damage.

Acai has been recognised as one of the world’s highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) foods. ORAC is a measurement of how well antioxidants can neutralise free radicals. The higher the value, the better the body utilises it to fight free radicals. Acai has more than double the antioxidants of blueberries and nearly ten times that of grapes.

The antioxidants found in Acai berry, anthocyanins, are excellent for heart health. Heart disease is increasingly becoming a problem in the world and finding natural ways of keeping your cardiovascular system healthy is an excellent option. Additionally, anthocyanins are also good at preventing the oxidation of cholesterol. When circulating cholesterol, no matter whether you have high or low levels, gets oxidised, it sticks to the walls of arteries causing their narrowing. This build-up of plaque eventually leads to high blood pressure which is of course dangerous.

-The fibre found in Acai berry skin and pulp can aid digestion. Fibre can help prevent or relieve constipation and may help support a healthy cardiovascular system.

-Acai is naturally high in essential fatty acids having a fatty acid profile similar to olive oil. The link between essential fatty acids and heart health and a healthy nervous system is well documented.

-Acai berries contain amino acids which help promote muscle performance, energy production, endurance and strength.

-Acai berries contain as much Vitamin C as blueberries and is also a source of Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and E. It is also a source of calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper.

With such an amazing nutritional profile, it is not difficult to understand why Acai berries can be beneficial for your health and may help slow down the ageing process.

What time during the day should I be using acai?

You can enjoy your Acai anytime of the day.

Why is Acai so expensive?

Acai is expensive since the berries have to be freeze dried within 24 hours to keep their nutritional profile intact. Freeze drying preserves the goodness of Acai berries found in the skin and pulp and not in the juice.

Is it safe to consume during pregnancy?

Generally speaking if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, we recommend seeking medical advice before using Acai or any of our other products.

Furthermore, to date, there has been no concerted investigation into the use of Acai in pregnancy and lactation.
